4x A2 acrylic studies on paper.

The reason behind these works was to loosen the way I paint. Using larger and more gestural brushstrokes and still keeping the same colour palette.

I wanted to make more expressive works since I was starting to feel quite restricted. Not sure why I was restricting my painting but this definitely feels more natural. To show this I photographed the process. I wasn't happy with them at first, they felt very flat. Then I obliterated the parts I didn't like with white. Focusing on the strongest parts of the painting to then work around that. I think this helped me a lot especially as a painter. Learning and understanding new processes and establishing what works or doesn't work for me.

I've also stuck to using the same colours, which represent the climate and time on my walks. The timing is important to me, the morning sun and first hit of fresh air is what I'm trying to capture.

Whilst in the process I was thinking about the theory of the everyday. How it may appear the same but it changes through aspects of time, mood and thought. I feel these paintings and my overall practice represents that so far. Initially I wanted these works to continue the Routes V series. But I just couldn't get them to fit in. The style is consistently changing as I learn and understand the process of painting

As I continue to experiment with my painting style. I decided to focus on one colour. Going with shades of yellow ochre. Lighting is very important on my outings, it impacts on my mood which sets me up for the day. It also makes Lulu happier. I felt this colour choice best represented that. Isolating one colour has worked well here, and is another method I intend to explore. I chose to keep the imagery somewhat the same as Routes V to maintain connection between works. This was a experiment was also testing a new paper I got a hold of. Firstly, too thin. But I do prefer working on paper that isn't white. I think white paper makes my work lack depth. To resolve this I've started layering my paper with raw umber

Completed A2 and two A3 acrylic works on paper.

I wanted to continue developing my painting style with these pieces. Visually, I hoped to convey more fluidity with my brushstrokes and use of acrylic paint. I have been enjoying using large square brushes and thick paint. These materials in use really emphasise physical activity from the walks. To expand on this idea, I considered aspects of time, climate, movement and emotion. These ideas are consistently moving, thus going hand in hand with my material use. I've also continued with the same colour scheme as the deep blues and yellow personally, evoke emotion for me as an artist. These particular paintings reference back to Grayson Perry's theory of "emotional maps." I strongly believe these accurately represent my current emotional "map" or "maps".
